There were ten of us in our group. a total of 13 started post paperwork from the trekking shed- with three guides. through rough terrrain and a steady climb. 2 from our group had to turn back since they hadnt really envisaged the climb and uneven surface. The total trek is approx 6 to 8 kms ( depending on if you take the short cut back on return) with steep climb the first 2 kms , wonderful grasslands and forest after that- there was a lot of elephant movement nearby and fresh elephant dung. Rangswamy temple was closed and around us was very misty and foggy so we couldnt really enjoy the view. but overall- I would recommend this hike. The guides are from the local community and very knowledgeble and helpful . One caveat- while the website shows a 154m elevation gain, our Gramin , and apple watch recorded a ~570m ascent !- so be prepared for a steep climb the first 2 kms for sure. and our group took a total of 5hours out and back and trekked 6.5km (we took the steep shortcut back )
I booked through trektamilnadu on weekday and to my luck I was only trekker that day🤩. I started from ooty around 7am, it took 2 hours to reach karaikayur trekking shed from ooty. The route from Shalom to Karaikayur is dangerous and thrilling as there is movement of wild animals elephant, sloth bears which are dangerous for bike riders. I had breakfast in kil kotagiri Which is very tasty.I Completed the formalities of trektamilnadu and started trek with 2 tribal guides who are from Karaikayur village. Total trek is of 9km, ascend is 5km of which 1st 2km is steep uphill with thick vegetation followed by 1km plain walk with intermediate grassland and last stretch of the trek involves steep uphill with 70° inclined walk. When we reached on the top of hill, we witnessed majestic view of bhavani sagar dam😍andthe small tribal villages. Ranganatgswamy temple is closed since it opens only on every Saturday and September is festival time also. , so poojaris came from solar route to clean the place nearby temple which was polluted by people visiting temple. Veerappanran used to visit this village frequently was told by guides and he stayed here during his kidnap to Dr Rajkumar. We can Poorivarai rock fort which is another option of trekking from Karaikayur. We can see dhimbam that and satyamangam reserved forest from top. After launch we start descending with short cut route but more steep. Finally we reached around 3.30pm to trek start point. Guides were knowledgeable and very supportive in explaining every bit of the topography.
