Vellingiri mountains form a major range in the Western Ghats in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Vellingiri, known as Saptagiri, seven mountains, is revered as a sacred spot as it is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. Several rivers, like Noyyal, Neelivaikal, Mayar, and Andisunai, originate from the hills and are the lifelines of people in the state. Vellingiri is considered one of the most difficult treks and demands good fitness from trekkers. One would traverse various topographies and weather patterns as one finishes the trek. The journey begins with dry deciduous passes through the evergreen forest and finally at the shola forest and grasslands. It is an ideal spot for bird-watching and has a high chance of wildlife sightings.
