The Jalagamparai trail is a verdant odyssey, a descent through whispering woods, moss-clad stones, and vistas that feel almost painterly in their composition. Every turn reveals a new hue of serenity, a quiet dialogue between earth and elevation. The trail culminates at the Jalagamparai Falls, once pristine, now overrun by the entropy of tourism. Yet, beneath the din and clutter, the waterfall retains its primeval majesty, a reminder of nature’s endurance beyond human haste. The ascent homeward is stern but surmountable, a slow burn of effort rewarded by the satisfaction of reclaiming altitude and calm.
This round trip trek on an old mountain trail, once a vital link between Yelagiri and Jalagamparai, is now closed to the public due to increased bear movement, making this guided trek truly special. Our journey began with a steady descent from Mountain View Adventure Park, Yelagiri Hills near the kottur forest rest house, to the Jalagamparai Waterfalls in the plains. This significant elevation drop – an approximately 4 km downhill trek by foot (a distance of nearly 40 km by road) – was completed in around 2 hours and 20 minutes with my 8-year-old. At the falls, we enjoyed a refreshing break, grabbed refreshments from the canteen, and could even take a quick bath if we wanted. The ascent back was initially steep and challenging, but thankfully transitioned into a more gradual climb after the midpoint. We reached the top in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. The trail, a mix of mountain and river paths, offered glimpses of wild chicken and multiple bear markings. Our knowledgeable guides assured us that bears are nocturnal, so there was no cause for concern during the day. Our guides were professional, patient and well-informed. They never rushed us, allowing ample time for rests and ensuring our comfort throughout the trek. The entire trek can be a bit demanding for little kids.
