Trichy is a city layered with history the Rock Fort, the grand temples of Srirangam and Tiruvanaikovil, a dam (Kallanai – Grand Anaicut) built in the second century that still stands. The Senbakam trail starts quietly, through millet fields and plantations, before entering a bamboo thicket that opens into forest. Drongos, paradise flycatchers, bee-eaters and the white-throated ground thrush are regulars along the route and the trees carry lianas in abundance a sign of healthy, undisturbed canopy. The forest is equally good for butterflies: blue mormon, blue bottle, common crow and various moths drift through the understorey. The trail traverses a tribal settlement before arriving at a temple, where the treeline falls away and the view opens up with farm fields, hills and valleys in every direction.
