My family did this trek on 15/aug and the reason why we chose this despite a 3.5 hrs drive from coimbatore is that we get to trek for 16+ kms. All other options were shorter distances. The rain started early in the morning as we approached the hills after Aliyar and continued till our descent late evening. Despite rains, we proceed to trek with 4 guides, all young locals. We started from Uralikal checkpost to the powerhouse downhill approx 9kms away. The trek was through beaten roads amidst lush forest. We did get to see sambar deers, a crocodile by the stream near the power house and a variety of birds. Took us about 3 hours to reach the power house because of incessant rains and multiple small stops to pick away the leeches that would stick to our feet. We were served a small meal as we reached and we shouldve trekked our way back if not for the rains. We were completely drenched and preferred to take the bus instead that leaves from the powerstation at 1pm back to Uralikal check post. Few pointers for trekkers who look to book this route - please carry rainwear, poly pouches to keep your phones / electronics and a spare set of clothes / footwear in case you have a long travel after the trek. There are a lot of leeches - please surf net for multiple ways you can keep them away. Carry some light snacks if you are a picky eater. Else you will get some basic stuff at 2 tea shops adjacent to the check post. Good initiative by trek tamilnadu for having mapped such routes for people who would love a trek on weekends. One suggestion and a very important one - important for people to not litter around on such pristine environment. There were a lot of poly and other litter especially at the power house where there is a guest house and some EB accommodation. Waste management is critical and tourists need to be educated to trek responsibiliy as well to leave as less footprint as possible to not affect the forest life.
My first trek with Trek Tamilnadu along with my family took me deep within the Shola forest. The trek starts as a downhill walk of 8 Km, and then, there's an option of climbing uphill the same way and reaching the starting point, or waiting for a once-a-day bus at around 1 PM to take us back to Valparai. We were accompanied by two guides, Prabhu and Prabha, and they pointed out animals like the Malabar Giant Squirrel, the Lion-tailed Macaque and the Common Macaque, many different birds and specific trees and plant varieties. Inhaled the fragrance of leaves of wild plants like ginger, lemon and coriander. An enriching experience taking in the beauty of nature with our senses.
This was my 1st trek with Trek TN ; reported at Manambolly forest Checkpost at 0645 on 1st May'25 ; Mr.Kamaraj forest officer & Trek incharge briefed me about safety aspects & signed the Indemnity form ; he delegated two escort guides Arun & Prabhu ; though I was the only person who had signed up for this trek I enjoyed the trek along with my knowledgeable guides Prabhu & Arun who knew the various flora around the place and had sharp eye & ears for spotting birds too about which I learnt a lot ; after reaching the lowest point at the dam powerhouse a light meal and refreshing lime juice had been organized ; rested for a short while and started the climb up back to Manambolly forest Checkpost where we reached at about 3 PM right on time for me to take the bus to Valparai ; on the whole it was a wonderful and enjoyable trek !
Our family 47,44 including kids 13,11 participated on 28dec2024 batch. Booked through trektamilnadu website. Whatever mentioned in this page all are true and everything has been provided. 4 trainee guides with 1 forest guard joie d with us the total batch of 10 members. We have started exactly by 7-730am. Trekking through this forest road is awesome journey. We understood the overall echo system how interdependence of birds, insects, leafs, trees by injecting themselves. How native breads are surviving against the foreign seeds. How our entire eco system balanced by trees absorbing all CO2. When tree is bigger means it consumed lots of CO2 thereby we get more oxygen. We have seen coffee trees, pepper trees, 150years old wood trees , hornbill birds, woodpecker, etc ..Guard Arvind explained each and every element of forest on the way to 3hrs trekking. TN trekking provided kit consists of clothbag, cap, ORS juice 1, peanut, cream bread, protein bar, Poha with paper cup. Seriously, all are very good quality and branded ones. Never expected from a govt agency. Most surprisingly, forest guide brought hot waters in flask and after 2 hours , we made sit on the road and our poha gets heated by their hot waters and warm breakfast is ready. My school going kids enjoyed the entire trip and felt the fauna and flora exo system in real life. At the end, we could seen the gem of natural rivers and elephants bathing. Overall the trip was very well organised, informative, highly recommended. Improvement needed: 1. Though sumo was provided for return journey to reach starting point Urulikal checkpost, accomodation for 11 persons was horrible. Kindly put bigger vehicle like tempo, or put 2 big cars 2. When we booked on 15th nov for 28th dec trekking, the price was high and no agewise price shown. After 1st dec, all prices are reduced and agewise still reduced upto 50%. So our family alomost paid 35% more than others in the same trip same facilities. Kindly ensure price up or down application to all bookings irrespective of booking date, instead of journey date.
Our trek into the Manambolly forest was truly wonderful. We were warmly welcomed by the forest guard, Kamaraj, and must mention the incredible support team from Trek Tamilnadu— Mr.Aravindan, Jayaraman, Anand, Deena, and Prabhu—who travelled with us and provided exceptional assistance throughout the trek. We had the chance to learn about various trees, plants, and birds in the forest. The trail was easy to navigate, and the team assisting us made the experience unforgettable. Walking through both evergreen and semi-evergreen forests and understanding the existence of each species was amazing. Mr. Aravindan, with his extensive knowledge of the Manambolly forest, shared numerous stories and answered all our queries. It was fascinating to learn about some of the unique plants and trees in the forest. This trek is highly recommended for anyone looking to connect with nature and learn more about the forest ecosystem.
