Srivilliputhur is a municipality in Virudhnagar district in the Tamil Nadu. The town lies 74 km south of Madurai and is connected to various other prominent towns like Rajapalayam, Sivakasi by rail and road. Sirvilliputhur is located at the foothills of Western Ghats, with an average elevation of 137.2 meters above sea level. The Shembaga Thoppu forest, found on the eastern slopes of Western Ghats is home to many endemic species. Shembaga Thoppu is located 8 kms west of Srivilliputhur had a wildlife sanctuary 1989 called Srivilliputhur wildlife sanctuary or Grizzled Giant Squirrel sanctuary. This was combined with Meghamali sanctuary in 2021 to make a contiguous corridor ideal for the big cats. The area covers the Grizzled Giant Squirrel (Ratufa macrora) protection along with Tiger (Panthera tigris) protection. This connects a chain of protected areas such as Periyar Sanctuary, Srivilliputhur Wildlife Sanctuary, Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Kalakkad Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary and Thenmala Forest Reserve making the animal movement quite seamless.
